Spines with bright gilt titles and decoration. Marbled page edges and matching endpapers. Blue engraved armorial bookplate to the verso of each front board for: "Henry & Mary Ponsonby*. Original Telegraph message loosley inserted (to lady Ponsonby). Also: Small binder's label: "Bound by Smith, 49 Long Acre." Jean-Jacques Grandville, Jean Ignace Isidore Grandville) throughout his career. Sir Henry Ponsonby was Keeper of the Privy Purse and Private Secretary to HM Queen Victoria from 1870 until his retirement through ill health in 1895. Lady Ponsonby, née the Hon. Mary Bulteel, was one of the Queen's Maids of Honour (junior to a Lady-in-Waiting) when she married Sir Henry in 1861. Henry Ponsonby was born in 1851 at Paris, France. He was the son of Miles Ponsonby and Barbara Wilson. He married, Elizabeth Jane Bulteel, daughter of Reverend Courtenay James Cooper Bulteel and Caroline MacDonald, on 24 April 1873 at Parish Church, Stoke Damerel, Devon, England. He and Elizabeth Jane Bulteel were divorced in 1882 on the grounds of his adultery and cruelty. **** Arthur Ponsonby is thought to be: Arthur Edward Valette Ponsonby was born on 3 December 1827 in Malta, his father, Sir Frederick Cavendish Ponsonby, was 44 and his mother, Lady Emily Charlotte Bathurst, was 29. He married Catina Dai on 3 September 1864. Light foxing to half title, otherwise clean French text and illustrations throughout, with just the odd light spot or small blemish. VG.
